Kallol Datta – sinful iconographer

“I prefer not to restrict myself to a particular theme; instead try a carefully careless look. Most of the people might find me crazy, but that’s what I am,” – Kallol Datta

So I absolutely love Kallol Datta! Having studied at both NIFT and Central Saint Martions, Datta absorbed in the multicultural surroundings he was in, delivering this inspiration through his designs. I love his style because he manages to combine structure and grunge together. Datta often refers to himself as a ‘magpie’ of sorts. His collection for WIFW 2010, was called ‘Conception Camp’ based on isolated nunneries in Russia, which were converted to prisoner camps, during WW1. This collection had less of prints and mostly structural garments in shades of purples. I like how he incorporated the ‘prisoner’ stripes in his garments.

From his past collections, my absolute favorite is ‘Avante Garde F*ck’ his SS10 collection. I love this mostly for the prints and structures he’s created. He completely transforms the kurta. into a object of desire! This collection deals with  an infestation series. The prints on this series range from toilet signs, cockroaches forming flowers, drangonflies and landmines. Check it out…
